What Matters to Me...

Creative Process

My hope is that my artworks will awaken, in the viewer, the same sense of life’s joys and possibilities which I feel as I create in my studio.  I paint and make sculpture to express my delight in seeking visual relationships and finding new connections within simple geometric shapes.

The discovery of harmony and symmetry leads to peace of mind.  When I complete an artwork, I have a sense that there is, indeed, order and beauty in this seemingly chaotic world.

Mathematical Focus

The subject matter of my paintings and sculpture comes from geometric diagrams.  My artworks reflect my study of the work of artist Jay Hambidge (1867-1924).  His work in art history uncovered the natural design law of dynamic symmetry.

I invented a generative art process.  Beginning with the square roots of the numbers 2, 3, and 5, I delineate a formal system of composition.  I apply the principles of dynamic symmetry as I explore subdivided areas of square root rectangles.   I seek the geometric and aesthetic properties of their proportions.  They become the framework that gives me infinite possibility for personal expression.
