Metalpoint Drawings

silksilvermpoint.jpg

The drawing above and the drawing below were both drawn with a silverpoint stylus.  They are from the Athena's Gift series.  Owing to the lightness of the drawn lines and the slight sheen of the metal, they are very difficult to photograph.

The drawing above is drawn with both a silverpoint stylus and a goldpoint stylus.  As a result of time, the lines drawn with sterling silver have turned brown; the lines drawn with 22k gold are still as grey when originally drawn.  Surprisingly, gold does not appear yellowish.  The drawing below is drawn with a platinum stylus.

At the start of the 21th Century, only a small number of artists undertake this technically demanding, unforgiving medium.  James Watrous, in The Craft of Old Master Drawings, writes “ In our day the knowledge of the distinguished history of drawing with metalpoints, and even of their very existence, is limited to some art historians, curators, and a few practicing artists.”

As I use lines drawn with metal to bring my ideas into the visual realm, I receive many aesthetic rewards.  I am fascinated by the medium as I observe the silver lines age to a deep brown and the gold or platinum lines remain a lovely grey.
